CAMPSITE CASTERS
CAMPSITE CASTERS
Campsite Casters
Campsite Casters is a magnetic fishing game for children ages 5-7. I was inspired by the aesthetic of summer camp in the 1970s and integrated that into the packaging, brochure, and stickers. The fish themselves are hand carved out of wood and their fins are made of polymer clay. They are hand-painted with gouache, and have a small magnet that attaches to the fishing pole so you can reel in the fish with ease.
My Process
I’m a tactile person, and I always begin my logos with a pencil and paper (specifically a Blackwing Pearl pencil as I am a bit of a stationary nerd). I knew I wanted to create my own lettering to best execute my idea and turned to campsite promotional materials from the early to mid-70s for typographic inspiration. Here are just some of the ideas I put to paper before creating the final design that I was the happiest with. After finishing a drawing, I scan it with my phone and import it into Illustrator where I’ll trace it using the pen tool. I ended up loving some of the other designs so much that I created a sticker sheet to go with the packaging and featured simplified versions of a few thumbnails that didn’t make the cut.
Throughout all my projects I love to create patterns using the product‘s logo, so for the fishing toy, I took the lure out of the lettering and created a fun polka dot pattern to use in the packaging on the tackle box. Once I finished creating the packaging, I worked with photographer Ashlyn Rancudo to take the beautiful product photography you see below.
